The Pitch: Raw black metal from Missouri trio Aphelion. FFO: Mayhem, Darkthrone
What I Like: I mean what can really be said of pure, unadulterated black metal that hasn't already been said? But also, how can I say no to helping out an underground band that somehow channels the icy cold of Norwegian forests from the hot and hazy South? Trust me ya'll, I lived in Memphis for 5 years, and there is nothing kvlt about it being 90 degrees and humid at 10 o'clock at night. In any case, these dudes do a great job of channeling all of the old tropes. Were I not already familiar with the album's source, I could easily be tricked into thinking this was some lost Scandinavian album from the 90's.
Critiques: If you were looking to step outside of the box, this ain't the one.
The Verdict: I is darkly enjoyable black metal that shows a deep love for its roots. If you are a glutton for 2nd wave atmosphere, add this one to your collection.
