The Pitch: Barcelona-based thrash/crossover band Crisix release their "devastating" fourth album, Against The Odds, via Listenable Records. FFO: Iron Reagan, Power Trip, Chaos
What I Like: I'm glad to have the opportunity to share some of these lesser known thrash bands with the public. From a surface view, the genre largely seems dead with only news of once mighty forerunnners dropping mostly mediocre material every so often. It's nice to find hungry young bands like Crisix to mix things up. This band is highly energetic and, as expected, brings a healthy dose of riffage to the fold. Vocalist Juli Bazooka's squelchy, high pitched voice brings with it plenty of hardcore and crossover vibes to compliment the raging D-beats. The rebellion is palpable. The first half of the album in particular is positively raging with memorable hooks, and I also appreciate the band's choice of more digital-sounding distortion. This element helps their sound stand out from the pack. And of course, who doesn't like Alien ("Xenomorph Blood") and Game Of Thrones ("The North Remembers") references in their music?
Critiques: I'm not a big fan of the more melodically driven tracks on this album. There are a few like "Perserverance" and "Prince of Saiyans" that just don't do it for me. They come off as generic. And I while I enjoy the metalcore vibes of "Leave Your God Behind," that style isn't this band's strength. Stick to the crossover.
The Verdict: While a little uneven, Against The Odds is just what the doctor ordered for your lackofthrashyitus. Crisix deliver some truly confrontational music across the course of this album, and with a little more focus I could see them going far.
