The Pitch: Graven Earth Records presents the latest release from Michigan's black and doom metal act Fell Ruin, who have taken significant strides forward since their debut. Olddwvrms, Maueutiste

What I Like: This barely sounds like the same band I reviewed around 2 years ago.  They have made some advances stylistically, implementing even more doom metal into their sound.  Furthermore, the writing of these parts comes across as more engaging than in previous material.  Like Maueutiste, it's less a consistent fusion of the styles than a constant wavering between plodding misery and blastbeat-driven second wave.  Speaking of which, the drumming is a big part of what makes this all come together.  They provide a varied, organic foundation of a performance that carry these larger compositions ever forward.  Thanks to a more rounded production job, both the drums guitars sound better than ever.  They are given the space they need to convey a wide range of ideas, all of which flow more smoothly from on movement to the next.

What I Don't Like: A few of the riffs could use some tweaking.  The opening of the first proper track drags a bit too long.  I also think there is still just general room for growth in terms of creating really ear-catching songs that convey more of a unique signature.

The Verdict: Well done, Fell Ruin.  Not only have you stepped up your game since Devices; you have generally manged to create some compelling black metal that bodes well for a your future.  Keep it up.
