You may have already caught this stream last month, but I found it interesting enough that I wanted to give everyone a second chance to hear more about it. Divinity are a group out of Calgary who play an interesting blend of progressive death metal. As you might be able to tell from the title, this is part 2 of a 3 part concept album titled The Immortalist. Rather than create a single LP, they decided to spread the story into somewhat of a serial spanning these three 4 song EP's. It's just another take on the changing business model.
As for the sound here, each track is a bit different, which is what caught my ear to begin with. "Manhunt" struck me as a more death metal take on Sikth, with the same focus on groove and shizophrenic vocals, but a less "core" approach. It is interesting to hear everything from death grunts to Dillinger-esque screams. "PsyWar," unfortunately for me was a bit of a dud. I like the last few minutes, but it struck me as a bit dull after such a solid opener. "D.M.T." really caught me off guard as it turns into a bit of a ballad...which may sound terrible, but actually ended up working for me. It's a unique touch and added to the album's charm.
The whole thing closes out with a more standard-sounding track called "Momentum" leaving us with the next cliff-hanger before the conclusion. All in all, I think that Divinity have the makings of a really solid and unique band. They play very well, have a sound all their own, and seem driven to make a name for themselves. My one critique is that I sometimes wonder if the concept here is detracting from the flow of the compositions. There are times where my enjoyment level dropped quite a bit, but not enough for me to shut it off. A little more focus on this aspect of the writing could take the band to a new level.
