The Pitch: “Pure HM-2 sound old school death metal” band Wombripper from Russia get their latest album From The Depths Of Flesh reissued by Redefining Darkness Records. FFO: Mammoth Grinder, Crypt Rot, Expulsion

What I Like: This album is a straight up beating. If the Russian threat is real, this is it right here. Ruthless, throat-scraping vocals, pounding double bass and D-beats, and yes, massive waves of HM-2 distortion make From The Depths Of Flesh a truly brain rattling experience. The production delivers such a massive wall of low end that it will give you concussions. And while the overall aesthetic is that of primitive bloodlust, there are definitely glimmers of technical proficiency in the occasional punctuated solo. And that's ignoring the sheer bpm's on display here. The drum break and subsequent DM hoedown about midway through "The Suicidal Recreation" alone will make you a believer in what Wombripper are laying down.

Critiques: Nothing really unique to speak of here. The band said it best themselves: "pure HM-2 sound old school death metal."

The Verdict: What From The Depths Of Flesh lacks in innovation, it easily makes up for in intensity. It'll knock your block off. I love a good OSDM album to mix up my playlist, and this one is right up there in 2018 with Mammoth Grinder.
