The Pitch: "Underground extreme metal trio Mammoth Grinder return after five long years with their fourth full-length Cosmic Crypt, a non-stop, meteoric force of aggression and mayhem." Featuring Chris Ulsh (Power Trip, Impalers), Mark Bronzino (Iron Reagan), and Ryan Parrish (Iron Reagan, ex-Darkest Hour) FFO: ZOM, Crypt Rot, Expulsion

What I Like: This was a last minute addition to my schedule, but I couldn't resist looking into a project with such a great list of contributors. Just be warned; this is far heavier than the crossover punk that these musicians are known for. True to the band logo and that album art, this is a f#%king death metal record. Cosmic Crypt is a dirty and delicious crust outing that, yes, incorporates plenty of punk influences into its rhythms, but plays out as what is already sure to be among the best OSDM albums of the year.

Songs play out in short concentrated bursts like a filthy hobo with a shotgun. Each one leaves a slimy trail of filth and viscera in its wake. Death growls echo disdainfully over grimy tremolo distortion and chaotic thrash solos; all to an infectious graveyard D-beat. Nothing flashy here; just the promise of unfiltered, unfettered death and destruction. I love it. I love every second of it. Sometimes I need a little Beethoven...others I just want to put my head through a wall.

Critiques: Spoilers...this isn't Beethoven.

The Verdict: Mammoth Grinder live up to their band name on Cosmic Crypt: this is certainly music worthy of dumping prehistoric elephants into a massive food processor. The resulting sausage may not be a 5-Star meal, but it is f#%king tasty.
