The Pitch: California old school death metal band Gruesome share a new EP through Relapse Records highlighting where they've come from, where they've been, and a taste of where they'll be going in the future.  FFO Death, Shed the Skin, Gutter Instinct

What I Like: While this is mostly previously heard material, Fragments of Psyche really does offer a nice cross-section of what they're all about.  You've got an excellent cover of Death's "Choke On It" to pay tribute to the band's roots.  Then there's a collection of early demos, which serve as an excellent reminder of what a strong foundation Gruesome already started with.  I can't stop screaming along to the chorus of "Gruesome."  Finally, we get a taste of new material in the title track.  It's a really good one, and even takes a mildly proggier direction without losing its gruff, old-school sound.

What I Don't Like: I'm just ready for a new full length already.  But you can't rush a good record.

The Verdict:  Fragments of Psyche serves as a strong reminder of how Gruesome have seen such a meteoric rise to become one of the world's premiere throwback DM bands.  Stream and buy below.  Be ready for another album in the future.
