The Pitch: Ottawa-based melodic black and death metal band Endemise create dramatic terror that they recommend to fans of Watain, Abigail Williams, and Dissection.
What I Like: The vocals. These blackened screeches and death metal overdubs are fantastic. They could use a touch more finesse and variation, but they have plenty of presence. i also like the piano additions. They add a sense of class and creepiness at the same time.
What I Don't Like: I am fine with things that have been done, but this formula just feels tired. Compositions feel very generic. These guys are perfectly good performers, but they could put a little more thought into the writing process. Build on your strengths, take it to new places.
The Verdict: Anathema is a promising outing for these Canadian natives, but fails to provide enough substance to back the strong performances. It is far from a bad album; I actually enjoyed it enough. I just don't think I'll be revisiting it any time soon. I will be awaiting your next one regardless, Endemise.
