The Pitch: Polish deathcore/death metal band Manipulation deliver a sophomore effort centered around torture and mind control via Give Praise Records. FFO: Thy Art Is Murder, Vader, Cabal

What I Like: Manipulation is a band that really got me interested with their previous effort. In an often bloated and bland scene, this band was delivering deathcore with a heavy emphasis on the DEATH. Fusing fun grooves with a certain level of technicality and Vader-ish vocals, these guys were bringing something a little different. I was especially fond of the track, "Lifetime," which showcased the band's ability to be extremely catchy without selling their death metal roots down the river.

Fast forward 3 years and the group have finally put out a follow-up; and while it's still not a home run, I continue to be intriqued by their overall potential. There are moments that really shine, as the the explosive conclusion of "Limits," the highly atmospheric opening of "Worshipers of Mirage," and extremely ear-catching "RFID." Once more, thanks to smart use of grooves, nice use of vocal cadence, and solid pacing; Manipulation put their songwriting skills on display to craft moments ripe for the mainstream deathcore crowd.

Critiques: The consistency still isn't there. There are plenty of moments on this album that come off as generic and uninteresting. Nothing really bombs, aside from some questionable lyrical choices, but suffice it to say that I'm not finding much drive to listen to this one start to finish over and over again.

The Verdict: Despite my misgivings, I am convinced that Manipulation have what it takes to go toe to toe with the likes of Thy Art Is Murder and Veil Of Maya. Honestly, these guys are heavier, more accomplished performers, and when at the top of their game mop the floor with anything these bands have put out. For that reason, Mind Control Ultra is an album worth checking out and sharing with your friends. Give them the support and feedback they need to get to the top.
