The Pitch: "Minipony is an experimental metal project, influenced by math, breakcore and latin music which mixes polyrhythmic structures with minimalist guitar riffs, and female growls. The group consists of Amadeus Galiano (electric guitars) and Emilia Moncayo (vox/sampling/noise), who joined forces in Bologna, Italy back in 2012. FFO: Meshuggah, Khroma, Syk

What I Like: This duo is cranking out some seriously interesting and convulsion-inducing music. The guitars are pure Meshuggah, but the drums have more of an industrial/electronic vibe. This latter element is particularly apparent on "Gatos," which has a breakbeat interlude that brought me back to good times listening to Pitchshifter in the 90's. But that's not all. Minipony get pretty experimental with the vocals. It sounds like Mike Pattonduring his tenure with Fantomas or The Dillinger Escape Plan in that the words are relatively inconsequential. The sounds that erupt from Emilia's throat are just another instrument. Be it screaming, speaking, or simply gibberish; it's all part of the larger composition.. Taken together, Imago is a groove-ridden, energetic thrill ride designed to keep you guessing without ever losing your undivided attention.

Critiques: There are a few parts that get a little goofy, for instance, "Minipony Meat" is amusing the first time but gets old pretty quickly. A little more variation in the guitar approach would be welcome as well.

The Verdict: Imago is a fantastic new entry for 2017 across all 3 scales. Compositions are skillful, but not inaccessible, performances are enjoyable, and most importantly Minipony deliver a product that is ultimately unique in execution. Another must-listen this year.
