The Pitch: Blasphemous Finnish black metal band Curse Upon A Prayer drop their latest EP through Saturnal Records. FFO: UADA, Pestifere, Sacramentum
What I Like: Like any good black metal band, Curse Upon A Prayer come with their share of controversy. They have been known to be staunchly against Islam, but as I've said before, if it's okay to criticize Christianity why should the second largest and fastest growing religion in the world be safe from the scourge? But honestly, I don't really care much about that. What matters to me is the music, and in the case of these 3 songs it's pretty damned good. Similar in style to UADA, The Three Woes showcases much in the way of melodic, earworm tremolo hooks made popular so long ago by the likes of Dissection. There is a profound sense of sorrow, especially in the appropriately-titled "Woe! Woe! Woe!" I must also give props to the drumming, as the album kicks off with an excellent tom fill and this energy doesn't cease until it's all over.
Critiques: There's nothing that particularly stands out about these guys. I'd have trouble picking them out from a crowd, and Lord knows it's a big crowd these days. They do the melodic black metal thing well, it's not very memorable.
The Verdict: Curse Upon A Prayer are a solid black metal band, and this EP is a concistent showcase of their strengths and abilities. But if they plan to take this project to the next level, it's going to take a little more in the way of innovation.
