The Pitch: The debut EP from Boston progressive/power/heavy metal band The Offering via Century Media Records. "The record features a tasteful amalgam of several hard rock and metal genres put together seamlessly into a unique, modern-classic aggressive sound, filled with top notch, deep musical compositions, and extreme, adept vocal performances, all put together into powerful song arrangements." FFO: Dragonforce, Ensiferum, Judas Priest

What I Like: I am so thrilled to share this EP, because I genuinely want this site to be represent as many different metal subgenres as possible. Unfortunately, despite the volume of power and heavy metal recommendations that cross my desk, few do much to really grab my attention. But The Offering is something special.  The Offering is that rare project that might make even the most hardened death metal fanatic contemplate further listening.  They possess the diverse skills and influences necessary to traverse between the heavier and melodic genres.

Thanks to a aolid union of death and power metal vocals, along with some really hard-hitting guitars, this EP is pretty damn fun.  The title track in particular warranted a rare cocked eyebrow reaction just moments in.  Excellent progressive riffs and contagious vocal hooks evoke a very noticeable change within me. I've gotta throw up the horns and let the long hair fly in full headbanging glory.

Critiques: There's still some generic power metal/heavy metal moments throughout the middle of the album. I'd like to see the death metal elements come forward a bit more and generally just more of that songwriting magic and energy of "The Offering."

The Verdict: The Offering have the right stuff to take the genre by storm much like Dragonforce did with "Through The Fire and Flames. They still have a bit of a road to get there, but this EP speaks volumes for their potential capabilities.
