Background

Finland's Rotten Sound has taken the scene by storm and pioneered its sound since its formation decades ago. Through their multiple releases and other contributions to the underground music scene, their name has long been a staple to the grindcore community.

Album Summary

Recently, the band released a new EP and follow-up to the popular Abuse To Suffer via the highly notable Season of Mist record label. This 12 minute release, consiting of seven tracks ranging from about one minute to approximately two and a half, is fairly sprawling grindcore that exhibits the four piece's eclectic and creative nature.

Analysis

Suffer To Abuse emulates the typical sound and grindcore production quality of the band in compact form. The drumming samples are old school-sounding as ever, and the riffs are delightfully chaotic without losing their sheen. You have your usual vocals with some death metal characteristics thrown in here and there. The EP opens up with a rather slow, doomy intro with its droning chords and high vocals before turning into a destructive mess of fast paced blasts and riffing. Style shifts continue from here with the next track possessing more of a powerviolence feel akin to Nails, while 'Stressed Mess' has a bit of a blackened vibe. The second half of the EP is mostly standard grind except for 'Nutrition', which slows things down just a bit.

The Verdict

Overall, Suffer To Abuse is a fairly mixed bag, with my faves being the opening track for its transitions and 'Stressed Mess' for its eclectic and almost black metal vibes. It brings up some cool ideas here and there, and then it's over before you know it. A quick listen if you want some grind with a little variety thrown in.
