Background

Dealey Plaza is a deathcore band from Fort Myers, Florida that has had a fairly decent impact on the underground scene since their 2012 formation. Following years of performing and recording, and with a career of line-up changes and a few distinct releases, the band is now making a return to form with their new EP.

Album Breakdown

This latest offering by the Floridian core-heads, titled Culture and Circumstances, is a roughly 17 minute EP that consists of just five tracks. The subtle release was made available digitally and physically via Chugcore Records early in the month of February 2018 and features as a follow up to the band's 2015 full length record Deliver Us.

The Pros

The new EP includes some interesting and powerful real world themes, such as the human condition and conflict in relationships. It opens up with a short, but fairly engaging song comprised of some face-melting vocals, stellar riffing and a brutally destructive chugging breakdown to top it off. Culture and Circumstances' general song structure is reminiscient of their other works, with a ton of heavy droning breakdowns and some well produced vocal work. The drums work for what they are, with their overall sound being more than competent throughout...and there are even some solid bass lines thrown in later on. The riffing picks up during some points, especially in the latter half of the EP.

The Cons

While this little EP does live up to most of its predecessors, there is little to offer within it in terms of innovation or any sort of change in the artist's sound or dynamicism. A lot of the material on here is stuff that you've surely heard before, though that's par for the course when it comes to much of the genre. The chugging and core vocals are abundant, per usual.

The Verdict

I'll just finish off this review by stating that, while Dealey Plaza haven't really changed or evolved much in terms of their sound over the years, it's still good to have them back and see/hear them kicking in this new and subtle, yet steady, return to form. In all, this is a mostly entertaining EP if you're into the stupid heaviness and breakdown happy side of the deathcore genre.
