The Pitch: Belgian blood-soaked death metal band Carnation unveil their latest album via Season Of Mist. FFO: Cannibal Corpse, Mammoth Grinder, Expulsion

What I Like: Carnation is what Cannibal Corpse would sound like if they took a more blackened, old school approach to the riffs. Simon Duson has a very similar approach to his deep death growls; sounding as if he is scouring his throat layer by layer with each explosive burst. But once again, they stand apart in in their focus on HM-2 distortion and application of D-beat. The resulting package of Chapel of Abhorrence is endlessly ominous and gratuitously heavy. It's highly consistent in its brutality with nary a lull in the action. Carnation chose an approach and stuck with it from start to finish.

Critiques: While the consistency of the album ensures that there are no real low points, it ends up feeling uniformly "just okay." There aren't a lot of standout moments that really grabbed me by back of the neck, and as a result it feels a little forgetable. Maybe I just need to give it a few more listens.

The Verdict: While it didn't really stick with me long after, Chapel of Abhorrence is an enjoyable album while listening that doesn't skimp on the violence. It's a bulldozing, decimating album that should please your average death metal fan's bloodlust. Get it tomorrow, but hear the early Youtube stream below.
