The Pitch: Moody, bombastic symphonic black metal from Athens, Greece.  FFO Cradle of Filth, Dimmu Borgir, Carach Angren

What I Like: This one takes me back to the first time I heard Midian and Death Cult Armageddon.  I feel as if the traditional approach to symphonic black metal has been somewhat waning of late, but Dark Portrait seem intent on bringing back the elements that made it so popular to begin with.  With the dramatic, gothic overtones or Cradle and the harsh, heaviness of Dimmu and Carach Angren, this band has all the makings of success if provided the right audience.  Furthermore, the implementation of classical piano, choral synths, and occasional female operatic vocals all show the marks of professional songwriters; arguably more so than the latest releases from their better-known peers.  At no point do I feel like this is a campy, over-produced romp through a vampire romance novel or tired expression of old ideas.  I wouldn't call it original either, but A Harrowing Atrocity has more genuine heart and vitality behind it than the forerunners have had in a good decade.

What I Don't Like: A few of the songs drag as the album moves into the second half, and as I mentioned they could infuse a little more originality into their sound.  Also, if you're too kvlt to appreciate this more accessible subgenre of back metal, I'm not sure that this album will change your mind.  But give it a try.  You might surprise yourself.

The Verdict: A surprise hit that seemed to materialize from nowhere like some phantom from the mist.  If you like symphonic additions to your extreme metal and any of the bands above, you should find appreciation for Dark Portrait.
