The Pitch: Belgium's popular death metal crew, Aborted, follow up their incredibly fun and much discussed Retrogore album with two new songs on Bathos via Century Media.  FFO: Benighted, Abnormality, Cryptopsy

What I Like: In this digital age, I feel like these short releases are the way to go.  I never used to buy EP's back in the day since you had to pay nearly full price for a physical copy.  I'm sure that this dynamic pressured many a band to rush out full releases, leading to a glut of filler material.  Nowadays, there's no excuse; when you have a solid Retrogore in your pocket, you let it ride.  Otherwise, just shoot us the music as it comes.  Bathos provides a nice continuation to their 2016 LP with both tracks satisfying the need for death, horror, and gore that we have come to expect from this band.  Aborted are masters of fusing the brutal technicality of death metal with the infectious accessibility of deathcore.  I know that some will resent mention of the latter genre, but the primary guitar hook on "Bathos" is a groove that would have been right at home on The Cleansing or This is Exile.  Nothing wrong with that.

Critiques: This release definitely leaves me wanting more, but that's probably a good thing.  Quality over quantity.  No need to rush out a full album.

The Verdict: Two really killer songs from a band that only seems to get better and better.  Be sure to grab these tracks digitally ASAP.
